Hindley Hall GC v Mytton Fold GC - Tuesday 10th September
Today Hindley Hall welcomed Mytton Fold for our rescheduled game. This was our last game before we try defend the President Trophy at Hurlston Hall GC.
Today, as always when we come to play Mytton Fold it always seems to rain. Yes today it did rain but it didn't dampen the occasion as always Mytton team very friendly and enjoy the banter.
The game started in the rain but brightened up after 45 minutes.
1st game between Harry Roocroft/Bernie Blood against Phil Chadwick/Chris Quinn. Apparently Harry was on fire like he as been all season went onto win 4/3.
2nd Keith Aspey/Ray Ward v John Hindley/Norman McMaster was also a convincing win for home team both players red hot won 7/6.
3rd Trevor Hartley/Tommy Mangnall v Alan Rodgers/Steve Golding came from behind to beat a very strong team on the last from being 3 down with 5 to go.
4th Gary Matthews/Kevin Leyland v David Pennington/Chris Coleman. The game started very tight with being all square after 3 with David chipping in on the 3rd then myself and Kevin kicked into gear to win 7/6.
5th Colin white/Anthony Skeat v Martin Pearce/Ewan McKenzie. This was another convincing win for home team Colin yet again on fire went onto win 6/4.

The home team quickly went 2 down after 2 holes but they then went onto a tremendous run to win 7/6 both players played very well a great result for the team to end a long damp season. Hindley Hall GC 10 points v Mytton Fold GC 3 points
Wilpshire GC v Hurlston Hall GC Wednesday 5th September
The weather again didn't play ball as a few sharp showers made the going tough. It was nice to meet up with Hurlston Hall to decide who would take line honours in second and third placings behind the League winners Longridge, congratulations to them.
Wilpshire being 2 points ahead it was going down to the wire.
First out we're Wilpshire's Ken Craven and Gerry Girvan against Hurlston Hall Andy Hall and John Walker, the home side winning 4 and 3.
Jack Taylor and Kevin Young took on Owen McCann and Peter Gaunt again the home team winning 4 and 3.
John Glynn and Craig Currie beat Martin Isherwood and Tom Kavanagh taking the win for Wilpshire with a 5 and 4 victory.

The last game between Wilpshire's Peter Butterworth and David Hawksworth v Andrew Cadley John Davies with the 3 and 1 victory going to the visitors and 3 points in the bag they came out on top and snatched second place in the League by 1 point.
Congratulations to them and all who played and thanks to my Wilpshire's team mates for their efforts during the season.
Wilpshire GC 6 points v Hurlston Hall GC 9 points

Editor's Note: Wilpshire like Longridge has been a stronghold for home wins and yet this season beaten twice this season. Congratulations to Leigh and his team as well as Gazza at Hindley Hall GC.
Mytton Fold GC v Hindley Hall GC
With the initial home and away matches this season of this fixture being rained off, the weather forecast for day was looked at with concern. At one time with heavy rain the night before followed by heavy rain during most of the day was forecast, this concern looked justified. Indeed when the teams arrived it was still raining. Hindley clearly did not fancy climbing all the hills in the rain and had ordered buggies for all the team. However by tee off time the rain had mainly ceased and the held off for most of the match – there was even spells of sunshine. In the match itself Mytton continue their recent improvement and ran out winners by four matches to two or by eight points to six.
Individual scores were (Mytton first):
Mackenzie/Bryan v Aspery/Edwardson win 5&4
Mahon/Main v White/Skeat win 3&2
Rogers/Frost v Hartley/Roocroft lost 1 hole
Waring/Aldred v Matthews/Leyland lost 4&2
Sharpe/Barr v Frost/Potter won 3&1
Worrall/Quinn v Jones/Cartwright won 3&2
Overall result: Mytton Fold 8 points Hindley Hall 6 points
Regards
Alan
Editors Note: The League always enjoy the aspect of a two course meal after all matches where possible. I received feedback from Jack Taylor from Wilpshire GC on the meal today at Hurlston Hall GC, including pictures of his plates. His comments were: ' There was TWO chicken breats wrapped in bacon, with a very large Yorkshire pudding along with three vegatables. Pudiing was a flan with a cream topping he could not pronouce. The away player voted it the best meal in the league by miles. Well done chef at Hurlston Hall. NF

Hurlston Hall GC v Longridge GC
The legend that is Dave Carling brought his intrepid Longridge team to Hurlston for their final match of the season, and Dave's last one as team organiser after 7 years in the job. The table-toppers and defending champions were keen for him to go out on a high note as a tribute to his service and dedication to the Club, while Hurlston rather unsentimentally were hoping, if only temporarily, to rain on his parade. What was the outcome?
Well, it was close, with plenty of drama. Hurlston lost two matches, but by only one hole, and were four up with four to go when Longridge fought back for a half in the first game. Results below, with Hurlston's pairs first.
Game 1. John Walker and John Davies halved with Gerard Dewhurst and Andrew Tillotson
Game 2. James Milner and Ray Moses lost 1 hole to Dave Carling and Jim Hardman
Game 3. Leigh McEvoy and Mark Rimmer lost 1 hole to Len Wright and John Cheadle
Game 4. Andrew Cadley and Derek Doyle won 3 and 2 against Robert Robinson and Paul Greenhall
Game 5. Tom Kavanagh and Tom Ainscough won 4 and 3 against Roger Cain and Ged Forrest
Game 6. Richard Quirk and Peter Gaunt won 3 and 2 against Paul Oliver and Martin Gray
So, Longridge were the happier of the two teams with the 7 - 7 points result
Longridge GC v Hart Common GC
Today on Fortress Jeffrey Hill we had a 10 mph southerly gusting wind, with intermittent showers making for some interesting, challenging golf. Again, to avoid any confusion the home players are named first.
Lenny Wright and his teammate John Cheadle managed a 2 & 1 win over team organiser Tony Robinson & Kev Sykes. Tony eagled the second hole. The Longridge pair battled down the back nine going 2 up by the 16th. John rattled the flag on 17 with his 3rd shot leaving a tap in 4 for half to secure the points for Longridge.
Match two also ended in a comfortable win for the home team of Dave Carling & Jim Hardman 5 & 3 over Les Goodier & Paul Rushby. It was mentioned in the after-dinner ramblings that this match entailed a little bit of rock and roll as the home pair played with two classic guitars
Les & Paul.
Tim Sherry & Andrew Tillotson beat Steve Edmonds & Chris Freeman by outputting them and eventually winning by 2 holes to 1.
Ged Dewhurst & Mick Dennison went 2 up after 4, however a good comeback from Roy Smith & Bob Mather saw them register an away win by 2 & 1.
Martin Gray & Andrew Bibby defeated Tom Aspey & John Armstrong 5 & 4. Tom commented after the match that the only time the Longridge pair made a bad shot was when the match was over.
The comeback pair of Paul Oliver and Bill Holmes finished off the afternoon with a 4 & 3 win over Stuart Brooks & Chris Radcliffe. I call Paul and Bill the comeback pair as Bill has been injured, not playing this year, and Paul was only playing his first match in the North West Seniors League this season.
Longridge have now played all of our home games this season and have scored 10 points in all of the matches. Just another bit of useless information.
On a personal note, this is the last report I will be writing as I am stepping down as Captain/Organiser of the Longridge North West Seniors League. I am sure you won’t miss the scribble or dribble as it has been called.
I will continue to play, if selected, but it’s time to pass over the blue folder that I inherited from Jim Clegg 6 years ago.
The result was Longridge GC 10 points Hart Common GC 3 points.
After today’s result Longridge remain top of the league by 17 points, however second placed Wilpshire have a game in hand. To make matters more interesting Hurlston will have a big say in who eventually wins the league in 2024. Longridge play their last match at Hurlston away on Monday 12th August. Hurlston also have to play Wilpshire both home on 19th August and away at Wilpshire on the 4th September. This means that Hurlston still have a chance of winning the league. Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned these facts??
Regards All. Dave Carling. Over and out.
Editor’s Note: Dave has always supported the League and officials with prompt reports and concise fixture arrangements. His only weakness is his public speaking, which no one will miss. Thanks you for all your help; Nigel Fairhurst.
Mytton Fold GC v Hurlston Hall GC – Thursday 8th August 2024
Report / result from today’s match:
With the weather forecast looking ominous Mytton Fold welcomed Hurlston Hall. In the event apart from a 10-minute downpour, the weather held out and conditions were good. The match was evenly tied at 3 matches each but with three points for away wins, Hurlston ran out winners by 9 points to 6.

Longridge GC v Hindley Hall GC Thursday 1st August 2024
Despite overnight heavy rain, by 9.30 am the Ribble Valley area transformed itself into the first day of the Summer. 23 degrees and 2 mile per hour winds. Stood on the first tee looking out towards Wilpshire the Longridge players reflected on the fact that the team on the opposite side of the valley currently had a slender 3-point advantage despite having played one more game, making this a must win fixture for the home team.
The home team will be named first in each match to avoid confusion.
Paul Greenall & Bob Robinson shook hands on the 16th green defeating Les Edwardson & Trevor Hartley 3 & 2.
Longridge Captain Dave Carling & Jim Hardman took the spoils in game 2 beating Ray (I got a two from 60 yards) Ward & his partner Bernard Blood 4 & 3.
Roger Cain & Mick Dennison kept Gary Mathews & Kevin Leyland quiet until they got in the clubhouse winning 7 & 6. I have got to say having shared dinner with the Hindley pair no one else got a look in, both taking the “Michael” out of each other. I think Kevin won on points.
Len Wright & Ged Dewhurst also won 4 & 3 over Graham Rigby on his first visit to Longridge, and Mick Lowe. The Longridge boys putted them to death.
Match 5 went the distance. Trevor Walker & Jez Holland lost to Colin White & Anthony Skeet by 1 hole. This match was called the Tony match. Tony winners & Tony losers which was mentioned in the after-dinner speeches. Hindley organiser Gary promised the two Hindley Tony’s a pint for avoiding the whitewash.
The final match was another one for the home team of Tim Sherry & Andrew Tillotson 6 & 5 over Glynn Jones & Alan Cartwright.
This was definitely a seniors/Alzheimer’s match which involved Jim Hardman in match 2 cleaning up the lost items for the Hindley pair in match 1. He picked up a ball marker on the 12th Green, and a wedge on the 13th.
I have got to say that both teams enjoyed the competitive nature of the day, and the banter that went with it.
The match ended with a win for the Longridge team 10 points to Hindley Hall GC 3 points to maintain a 7-point advantage over their rivals Wilpshire with just 2 more games remaining.

Wilpshire GC v Hart Common GC Wednesday 24th July
Bright sunshine and a warm welcome greeted the visitors from Hart Common GC, who were watching the two GPS mowers cutting the first and second rough. Roy Smith asked how many Wilpshire Gc have? Two replied Jack Taylor; Roy boasted the FOURTEEN at Hart Common GC!
Lenny Gillett/ Gerry Girvan overcame Kev Deighan/John Starr 6 & 5. Gerry has been watching too many Youtube videos on golf swings and had a mare last Saturday, but today he announced he just played his usual simple swing and played a blinder.
International traveller Peter Butterworth graced us with his presence along with another world airline lover Phil Burgess were giving shots to Chris Freeman/Les Goodier but overwhelmed them with a 7 & 6 victory.
John Trusdale/Jack Taylor overcame Mike Hughes/Kevin Sykes 5 & 4 with Jack’s slice shots winning the day.
Club President Paul Hunter with Manc Blue Kevin Young also won against Roy Smith/Mark Royal 5 & 4.
The final game saw the Hart Common pairing of Steve Edmonds/Steve Pickett had a great win over retired doctor Andy Bristow and Dave Hawksworth 3 & 2.

Wilpshire GC 10 points v Hart Common GC 3 points.
Longridge GC v Wilpshire GC 18th July
Longridge welcomed Wilpshire to the fell on a warm but muggy day with a 7 mile per hour south west wind. It was obvious from the start that both teams were up for the battle with a few wind-up comments over coffee and biscuits.
Match 1 finished on the 17th with a 2 & 1 win for the hosts Paul Greenall and Gordon Cronshaw over Jack Taylor & Stewart Cook.
Out second was a rematch between Dave Carling & Jim Hardman v Lenny Gillett and Gerry Girvan who played against each other at Wilpshire. The result was exactly the same, a half. So, both pairs have ended up unbeaten against each other. Maybe they should have just stayed in the bar. Gerry asked after the match if they could play against a different pairing next time. I wonder what prompted that comment??
The 3rd match was also halved. Ken Craven, backed up by Kevin Young won the 18th to gain the draw against home pair of Lenny Wright & Trevor Walker.
Wilpshire President Paul Hunter & team organiser Brendan Barrett lost to the steady pairing of Steve Brooks & Ged Forrest 3 & 2.
Further progress for the home side followed with Roger Cain & Ged Dewhurst, who putted like gods to take the 5th match 7 & 5 over Peter Butterworth & John Kay.
The match fixture was finished off with the home players of Tim Sherry & Andrew Tillotson defeating John Glynn & Dave Hawksworth 5 & 4.
The result was 10 points to Longridge and 2 points to Wilpshire. The Longridge team have now built up a healthy lead of 11 points in the league standings with 4 games left to play.
However, this lead is not that comfortable and there are still plenty of points to play for.
Longridge GC 10 points v Wilpshire GC 2 points
Hurlston Hall v. Hindley Hall 15th July 2024
It might have been St Swithin's Day, but amazingly for this summer, the sun was out for the start of this match. Guess what? It rained on the final three groups, so now we can expect another 40 days of rain, to go with the preceding 40 days of rain we have just had. A bright spot was the hole-in-one scored by Hurlston's Chairman, John Walker, most of the joy coming from the prospect of free drinks in the bar. Congratulations John. Hurlston welcomed the return of Owen McCann who has been out recently with a bad back. I believe he injured it pulling the settee closer to the tv screen to watch his favourite show, 'Naked Attraction'.
On to the results, Hurlston players first:
Graham Greene and John Davies lost 1 down to L. Edwardson and T. Harney
Derek Doyle and Andy Hall won 3 and 2 against Ray Ward and Geoff Cogswell
Leigh McEvoy and Ray Moses won 1 up against Graham Rigby and Keith Potter
Bernie Grady and John Walker drew with C. White and K. Walmsley
Andrew Cadley and Peter Gaunt lost 1 down to Gary Matthews and Kev Leyland
Mark Rimmer and Owen McCann won 1 up against G. Jones and A, Cartwright
So, three wins for Hurlston, two for Hindley, and one half, so the battle of the Halls ended 7 - 7.
Hurlston Hall GC 7 points v Hindley Hall GC 7 points.

All but one match went to the 18th green with very symmetrical result - Mytton winning two, Hart Common winning 2, and 2 being tied. However, with three points for an away win, Hart Common ran out winners by 8 points to 6.

Hurlston Hall GC v Mytton Fold GC Monday 17th June 2024
The quirks of being team captain were highlighted today. First, a 9.00am phone call at home from a team member with an emergency vet appointment at 10.15 (yes, he has a pet). Can he be moved from second game to sixth, in case he's delayed? No problem, as I informed Mytton's team captain, Alan, and we agreed that the second game would move to last. Arriving on the tee as the 'new' second game, having moved up from third, (are you still following this?) Gurpreet and I introduced ourselves to our opponents. These turned out to be the two Peters from game six, believing they had swapped with game two, and not the Mick and Gary we were paired against. No, I explained, we've all simply moved up one in the running order. Eventually, the correct group was mustered and off we went, in decent conditions and even a little late sunshine. As The Who said, 'the simple things in life are all complicated'.
Match Results (Hurlston Hall GC pairs first)
1. Andrew Cadley & John F. Davies beat Frank Nickson & John Hindle 5 - 3
2. Terry Broderick & James Milner drew with Steve Worrall & Phil Chadwick

4. John Sharps & Tom Ainscough beat Alan Rogers & David Proctor 2 up
5. Gary Almond & John Walker beat Geoff Holtom & Jim Bridge 6 - 5
6. Bernie Grady & Peter Gaunt drew with Peter Main & Peter Sharpe
So, Hurlston won four and drew two, giving a result of:

Hindley Hall GC v Longridge GC Tuesday 11th June 2024
Reigning champions and we found out why they are:
Game 1 was between Gary Matthews and Andy Taylor v Paul Greenall and Adrian Lewthwaite.
The game was played in great spirit it was a very
tight game we gave a couple of silly holes away but we all can say that we
played against Adrian who was on fire for a 16 hcp and 76 years old he was on
fire probably only dropped 5/6 shots myself giving 7 shots was a struggle but
credit to him he was fantastic. Paul played pretty good but could not get a
sniff. I saw something yesterday not before in many years both players had a
double hit but worse thing they both got pars with shots on the holes they had
a double hit and they won 3/2.
Game 2 was between Harry Roocroft and Mick Holland
against Dave Carling and Jim Hardman which they won 2/1. Apparently, Harry
played really well up to 12 holes but away team were too strong and won.
Game 3 was between Colin White and Steve Ashcroft v
Tim Sherry and Ged Forrest home team got off to a flyer and were 6 up after 10
holes then away team came roaring back with 4 holes on the trot home team held
on for a 3/2 win thank God!
Game 4 was between Alan Frost and Brian Green v
Martin Grey and Jeremy Holland, the same thing home team started very strongly
going a few up then away team came fighting back, close all the way but ended
in a half.
Game 5 Anthony Crowther and Alan Cartwright v Mick Dennison and Ged Dewhurst again the game was really tight till the 14th then away team extended their wings for an away win home team couldn't live with GED was on fire apparently.
Game 6 was between Mick Lowe and Peter Mills v Bob Robinson and Gordon Cronshaw yet again home team couldn't manage a result against away team who was playing so well it was a great result for Longridge GC not so for Hindley Hall GC. Longridge won 3/13 sadly but all games were played in the spirit of the game which is what we expect and thanks it was well done Longridge GC.
Hindley Hall GC 3 points v Longridge GC 13 points
Hurlston Hall GC v Hart Common GC
Hurlston were happy to welcome Hart Common today and thank them for hosting the AGM in May. Remember that day? All sunshine and shorts. We hoped for similar weather. COURSE CLOSED said our IG app at 7.30am, following an inch of overnight rain. But the course opened at 10.00am and play started an hour later in the cold and freshening wind. The greenkeepers hadn't been able to let loose the mowers in the wet conditions, but the course was still well-presented, following our Club Championship weekend. The meal afterwards was fine too, spoilt only by presenting us with 'mushy peas', the vilest foodstuff so far invented, including sprouts. Thanks to Chris Radcliffe for standing in as Hart Common Captain and bringing updated handicaps.

Longridge GC v Hurlston Hall GC
Longridge welcomed Hurlston to the fell on D Day the 6th June. The temperature on my app reported 14 degrees C, but with the wind chill it was more like 10 degrees. The main thing was that it didn’t rain. The course was in great shape, and the greens were very good as usual.
The Hurlston pair of James Milner & Andy Cadley led the attack v Paul Greenall & debutant Jez Holland, going two up after 2, resisting later counter attacks finally holding on for a 2 & 1 win.
Longridge pair of Dave Carling and Jim Hardman took an early lead over Ray Moses, and Peter Gaunt. Jim birdied the first and a par on two to go 2 up. Peter Gaunt kept Hurlston in the game winning 4 of his 5 shot holes making 3 nett birdies and 2 nett pars to stay in the game, but could never get in front. The Longridge pair held them at bay needing a half on the last to give them a 1-hole win.
Game 3 saw Longridge pair of Trevor Walker & Lenny Wright beat John Walker & Ian Gore 2 & 1. The highlight of the game exploded on the par 3 12th. John chipped in for a 2, followed by Trevor sinking a 15-foot down hiller also for a 2 and a half.
The home team pair of Steve Brooks & Ged Dewhurst defeated Owen McCann & Gary Almond 4 & 2. Owen making a two on the difficult 8th.
The little & large of Longridge Roger Cain & Ged Forrest blasted Leigh McEvoy & Kevin Blaine’s out of the water with a 5 & 4 win.
The final match saw the home team of Tim Sherry & Gordon Cronshaw outgun Tony Rice & Chris Nolan 4 & 2.
The result was Longridge GC 10 points Hurlston Hall GC 3 points.

Wilpshire GC v Longridge GC Wednesday 29th May
Overnight heavy rain would have closed most golf courses, but the Wilpshire ground staff do a fantastic job of maintaining the course under the watchful and experienced Head Greenkeeper Rob. In addition, the club have invested in a GPS robot grass system and we are now getting used to these machines wandering the course, keeping the grass low and in pristine condition.
Rain greeted League Champions Longridge GC led by the dour yet passionate Dave Carling, who has been in the role for many years. Thanks to Dave for allowing the juggling of the playing order whilst Alain Knott was ferrying holiday makers to airports early in the morning.
Results as follows, not necessarily in playing order!
Ken Craven & Alain Knott beat Gordon Cronshaw & Gerard Dewhurst 4 & 3.
Lenny Killett & Gerry Girvan drew with Dave Carling & Jim Hardman.
Kevin Young & Jack Taylor drew with Stev Brooks & Ged Forrest after Kevin sank a monster put from the back of the green on the 18th.
Club President Paul Hunter & Roger Hetherington drew with Leonard Wright & Trevor Walker.
Craig Currie & John Gynn beat Tim Sherry & Alan Lewis 4 & 3.
Last out; late replacement Nigel Fairhurst and Dave Hawksworth lost to Paul Greenall and Andrew Tillotson 3 & 2. Our game played in the spirit of the League with the visitors two up after two, all square at the 7th, but then class prevailed with Paul getting up and down with pars on five occasions. Andrew also played some great golf, particularly on twelve with a second shot from under the trees to leave him with a four-foot putt. Thanks to the staff for great service and food…but where were the Farnworth sausages!!
Result: Wilpshire GC 7 points v Longridge GC 6 points.
Hindley Hall GC v Hurlston Hall GC 27th May 2024
Rain welcomed Hurston Hall to Hindley Hall GC on a Bank Holiday Monday with the first two holes wet but the skies cleared and play started on time.
Game 1 Martin Lundy & Harry Roocroft v Mark Rimmer & Owen McCann; Gary writes:
Martin & Harry played Mark & Owen apparently Harry was on fire then Mark & Owen fought back but not quite enough they lost 2/1
Game 2 Gary Matthews & Kevin Leyland v Martin Isherwood Andy Cadley
Gary & Kevin played Andy & Martin a very close game the greens got the better of away team Gary & Kevin winning 2/1
Game 3 Les Edwardson & Anthony Skeat v Leigh McEvoy & Ray Moses
Les & Anthony played Leigh & Ray looking at the score I don't think it was a close game apparently played well but not good enough Leigh & Ray won 5/4.
Game 4 Jim Mason & Mick Holland v John Walker Pete Gaunt
Jim & Mick played John & Peter another close game apparently but away team finished the stronger and won 3/2.
Game 5 Glynn Jones & Alan Cartwright v Terry Broderick & Graham Greene
Glynn & Alan played Terry & Graham another very close game that went to the last and Glynn & Alan were victorious on final hole
Game 6 Mick Lowe & Alan Frost v James Milner & Thomas Ainscough.
Alan & Mick played James & Thomas which yet again was another close game home team were once 3 up but the away team fought back and managed get the win on last.
All the games were played in good spirit thanks to Hurlston Hall GC the result was 3 1/2 / 2 1/2 which means:
Hindley Hall GC 7 points v Hurlston Hall GC 7 points.

5.G. Matthews/K Leyland won 2&1 v A Bristow/N Grice.
6.G. Jones/A. Cartwright half game. V P. Butterworth/D. Hawksworth.
All games were played in great spirit as it should be myself and Kevin had a great game in game 5 against Andy/Nigel saying that Nigel parred all the hardest holes with shots in the 6 game Alan Cartwright holed a 70-yard wedge for a 2 with a shot, so result was after away points etc.
A good result for both teams thanks to Brenden for organising it was a good day lucky with weather rain stopped after 4/5 holes thankfully.
Hindley 3.1/2 games Wilpshire 2.1/2. So, result was 7/7 with away points.
